Dear All,
232,709 Motorists have been reported to the “police” since 2022 by fellow drivers, who submitted dashcam footage through a government scheme designed to have us all spy on each other — called “Operation SNAP”…
The scheme has essentially outsourced enforcement to the public, turning ordinary road users into an army of unpaid informants.
What kind of person would actually do this kind of thing to someone who strays over a white line — or veers in to a bus lane — is honestly beyond me!
But it’s working exactly as intended…
The official line — of course — is that it’s about “road safety.”
Only 43% of dashcam owners say their main reason for having one is to protect themselves in case of an incident.
That’s rather telling, isn’t it?
A device that was supposedly built to help ordinary Motorists prove their innocence has been quietly repurposed into something designed to report each other to the government!
East Germany vibes anyone?
How about North Korea?
It seems that dashcams have sadly become part of the infrastructure for mass civilian surveillance in the UK.
I don’t think I should really need to say this… but if I saw someone committing an *actual* crime (murder, robbery, unprovoked violence for example), I’d be the FIRST to use anything I had to help the actual Police help the actual Victim.
But that is absolutely NOT what’s going on here!
The instinct is for these people, who have an inconsequential gripe with someone else, to ask the state to penalise them on their behalf.
The “police” don’t need to go and solve actual crimes.
They just need you and I to feed them silly disagreements from stressed out — and possibly mentally disturbed — people on a plate.
I’d like to get your take on this! Let me know your thoughts in the comments here:
All the best,
Adam
Fully agree 100% to your comments
Thanks for the info
Petty people I’m afraid.
If it’s something dangerous I could understand it.Once again Petty people!
I would happily report a middle or 3rd lane hogger. They are a blight on our motorways!
Totally agree with you on this one. It is unbelievable to see the amount of incompetent and nervous motorists on the motorway.
I think drivers should not be allowed on a motorway until they have passed a competency test that they can drive at 70mph and observe lane rules
I fully agree dashcams should be only used for their persona use and not to report issues to the authorities. Where is GDPR?
I think it’s disgusting.n should not
be allowed. for minor “lapses”.
It really depends on the behaviour – there was a recent report of someone who undertook using the hard shoulder n I, for one, wld be v unhappy in that situation. I wld’ve been v tempted to submit evidence so they cld be spoken to by the authorities.
This makes me laugh as while sat in a queue on the m5 last year a person in a bmw decided to take to the hard shoulder. Came past me at about 50 mph closely followed by an unmarked bmw 300 yards and there he was trying to explain things
I would never ever shop, report a fellow motorists for a motoring offence.
We have already far to many laws & regulations created by the undemocratic governments.
Yes I agree
In france they have been doing this for years car cams videoing speeders and parking offenders and getting paid when the offenders are fined. I used to be a bus driver and on one perticular bus stop you had to wait 3quarters of a hour in the laybie the pte paid one house hold 3 grand a year to spy on us to see if we turned up early or left early that was over 13 years ago and they are still spying on the drivers now.
The country is full of back-stabbing layabouts who have nothing else to do; bring back national service and instil some decency into people
I am that sort of person to use dashcam footage to report my fellow ‘motorist’ and as such you’ll probably have to remove me from your mailing list. I have front and rear cameras and was chased by an irate van driver who eventually cut in front of me and jumped out of his van to fight me. I have no regrets about reporting him.
It depends on what the camera footage is used for. A couple of years ago I’d have love to have camera to report on two trucks, bulk carriers. The first one raced the changing traffic lights coming off a motorway slip road onto a round about, crossing on red. I was staggered by that, but then the second one then charged the lights long after they’d gone red. Luckily there was no one coming from the right or I’d have been a spectator to a fatality. But those sad individuals posting minor infractions due to their own pettiness or hurt feelings deserve our contempt. As frankly do the police for using such material in order to act as the facilitators of spite.
I have not got a camera in my car but have been thinking of getting one for protection purposes.
This encouragement by the police is only to help cover their inefficiency as it must increase their convictions without any effort from them.
I agree but I also understand due to the atrocity of driving standards today.
And when you ride a motorcycle as I do you’re even more aware of how bad drivers are ( not all) I might add. I have reported 2 drivers in the last 5 years, for which I do not apologise, as they were weaving from curb over to the crown of the road for a few miles.
Totaly agree with you Adam but so much backstabbing low life today in the UK ones with a big chip on their shoulders how low some people can stoop ? makes you wonder.
Just hope that one day it bites them back.
Nobody likes a grass…
If my dascam caught someone driving all over the road because they could have had too much to drink, or possibly having a medical episode I would definitely report them, it would be irresponsible not not. That person they they could possibly knock over over and injure, maim, or kill could well be a family member of mine. Most other driving infringements I would ignore.
I wonder how many police officers hvae nbeen charged from people submitting dahcam evidance uf thier motering crimes ?
If one of my Neighbours sneakily reported me to the police he would find out very quickly how offended I was when he received a smack in the mouth.
Hi Adam, thanks for your interest: I like this weather. People who don’t think it’s cold and wet enough only have to wait for their dreams to come true. About this Operation Snap: thank you Peter Scott for reminding us that the French do it for money which you, Adam, reported a year or 2 back. As for your ‘What sort of person’: it includes some very rational BTST members who don’t like to see bad drivers getting away with it. Let’s not get carried away. I keep pointing out that Divide and Rule is how Society works (or doesn’t, as you keep complaining and I agree), so no more of this ‘I’ve been living in a cave on Mars for 10 years with my eyes closed and fingers in my ears’. Please. How’s the Call Option on Oil working out? Regards.
100% agree with your comments, that’s the society we live in today.
I bet the people reporting never do anything wrong do they !
Agreed, people are petty do gooders, I had one person sent a dashcam in of me behind them saying I was to close and it was looking like I was going to be prosecuted until I sent my dashcam of the incident with the person who sent it in carving me up on the dual carriageway then all of a sudden everything was dropped
this government we either hate or love are REDS Putin would love them their moto we keep the RED FLAG FLYING HEAR SHOULD TELL YOU ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW THEY JUST NEED THE HAMER AND SICLE THEY Will USE ANY WAY THEY can to put us off the roads and this includes the snitchers who in time will make a mistake them selves and when this happens some one will tell on them and it could be the loss of their LICESENCE FOR A LONG TIME which could mean the lose of their job that would not worry me at all serve them right and if it was my neighbour I would be the first to tell good and no I will not give you a lift get the bus if their are some, every one makes a mistake some times are they so good they never do I don’t think so and the Police are the enemy and their driving leaves a lot to be desired how about reporting them or as I find they think they are above the very law they are their for as they say snitchers what goes round comes round you are the worse people in the world
Be warned , the first thing please do is ,seize your SD card of your dash cam if you’re in an accident , ! ?
I agree 100%. Unfortunately I was a victim of such an informant. It wasnt even me that was driving but someone borrowed my car. I couldn’t give their details as to identify the driver and it was me who got the MS90. Disgraceful if you ask me.
It is all about unearned income. The country is going (has gone) to pot.
There are a lot of bad drivers out there and it’s quite disturbing to see the risks they take just to get ahead.
There are a lot of very good drivers who can manage to go faster and manoeuvre in a very slick fashion that saves time for us all.
Having to drive at 20 mph on a good number of journeys is not really safer as it then makes people rush more when out of that zone. I think it should be much slower near schools and villages.
Back to the point though I don’t agree with snitching on each other. I don’t think it’s helpful unless it’s serious.
I try to compensate for other drivers bad behaviour on the road but I do swear to myself about it.
Bunch of tattle tails and karens telling on people, like pathetic little children!
Despite the original intention and purpose for inventing something, mankind has always found another use, not originally intended. Bows and arrows, and spears were originally invented to shoot animals for food, and then some people found that they could also use the tools for waging war. Why wouldn’t you use the tool at hand designed to help prove that other person(s) were in the wrong, when it can capture images of absolute selfish and dangerous drivers spoiling the roads for the rest of us?
Adam, you do give the impression that you should be left alone to do anything that you want to do on the roads. Don’t get me wrong, I do not like the way that the police go about their business, but I do respect that there is a need for laws to keep us all safe.
So, when i saw a white van man go over a red traffic light and nearly hit a child crossing the road???
Thoughts please..
Nearly. So didn’t. If the van hit the child then your dashcam would be helpful.
About one million people were reported to the Nazis and possibly more to the Stazi because the authorities encouraged reporting/ratting on neighbours. Many lost their lives.
Ergo ratting is bad
It’s another far left government cultivated weed, feeding off the poison of humane nature.
This will grow and grow until it suffocates any ambition you may have to own and drive a car.
Eventually stepping out your front door, will be something to worry about.
I genuinely use them mainly for protection such as who’s at fault in a narrow country lane collision.
Very rarely I have sent in footage of seriously dangerous driving.
